What is ZigZu?
ZigZu is a reading coach for children ages 4 to 8. The app listens as a child reads English picture storybooks aloud and provides real-time pronunciation feedback in Indian English. Built by ANA PlayLabs Global Private Limited, ZigZu uses speech recognition tuned for Indian children's voices, includes a library of 100+ levelled storybooks, and is free to download on Android and iOS. Every family gets a 7-day free trial. After the trial, continued use is an in-app subscription costing ₹1,499 a year or ₹249 a month. ASER 2024 found the share of Class 5 students who can read a Class 2-level text rose to 44.8%, up from 38.5% in 2022, but more than half are still behind — the reading gap ZigZu addresses. Unlike passive video apps or generic phonics drills, ZigZu requires the child to read aloud and corrects the words they actually miss, the way a good human coach would.

The problem ZigZu solves
ASER 2024: only 44.8% of Class 5 students can read a Class 2-level text, up from 38.5% in 2022 but still fewer than half. Most Indian children can decode English words on the page but get no feedback when they read them aloud. ZigZu fixes this by listening as your child reads aloud and coaching pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. The way a good human coach would.
How ZigZu works
- Your child opens a storybook matched to their reading level (9 reading levels, ages 4 to 8).
- They read aloud into the phone or tablet. ZigZu listens with speech recognition tuned for Indian English accents.
- Real-time feedback: mispronounced words are highlighted, the correct sound is modelled, and the child tries again. No shame, no scoring.
- Progress tracking for parents: weekly reports on fluency, vocabulary growth, and words mastered.
Why ZigZu works for Indian children
- Speech model trained on Indian English pronunciation (t/th, v/w, short vowels)
- Systematic phonics sequence aligned with NCERT Marigold and CBSE foundational stage
- Culturally familiar stories: Pratham Books, Tulika, Karadi Tales and originals
- Works on budget Android phones; microphone-only, no special hardware
- Screen time is read-aloud time. No passive scrolling. No ads.
For parents
You do not need to know phonics. You do not need perfect English. ZigZu does the teaching. You just sit next to your child for 20 minutes a day. COPPA-aligned privacy, no ads, no social features, no in-app purchases pointed at kids.
